Oman Type Approvals (Telecommunications Regulatory Authority)
Type approval in Oman is managed by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).
Important Update (August 2024): The TRA implemented significant changes, most notably ending the “indefinite validity” of certificates. All new certificates are now valid for 4 years, and a new labeling scheme with a QR code has been introduced.
1. Regulatory Authority
Authority Name: Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).
Mandate: Controls the import and use of all radio and telecommunications terminal equipment to ensure network compatibility and spectrum management.
2. Key Requirements
Local Representative: Mandatory.
Foreign manufacturers cannot apply directly. You must use a local Omani company that is registered as a “Dealer” with the TRA.
The certificate is technically issued to the local dealer, not the foreign factory.
Validity: 4 Years (New Rule).
Previously, certificates were valid indefinitely. As of August 2024, they now expire after 4 years.
Retroactive: Certificates issued before 2020 are now considered expired and must be renewed immediately.
Testing: No in-country testing is required.
The TRA relies on document review of foreign technical reports (CE/RED).
Lead Time: 2–4 weeks (assuming the local dealer is already registered).
3. Required Documentation
The application is purely digital (e-Type Approval), submitted by the local dealer.
Test Reports (RED/EU):
RF: EN 300 328, EN 301 893, etc.
EMC: EN 301 489 series.
Safety: IEC/EN 62368-1.
Declaration of Conformity (DoC): Manufacturer’s DoC.
Product Photos: Clear internal and external photos.
Technical Datasheet: Must clearly show supported frequency bands.
4. Technical Frequency & Network Notes
3G Shutdown (Completed July 2025):
Oman has officially shut down its 3G network.
Impact: Devices that are 2G/3G only (without 4G) are generally banned or will not function. All voice-capable devices must support VoLTE (Voice over LTE).
Wi-Fi 6E (6 GHz): Approved.
Oman has allocated the 5925–6425 MHz band for Low Power Indoor (LPI) use (max 200mW).
5G: widely deployed and type approval is active for NR bands.
5. Labeling Requirements (Updated)
Mandatory: Yes.
New Format (Post-August 2024):
The label must now include a QR Code in addition to the standard text.
Content:
“TRA” Logo/Text.
Dealer No: (The local rep’s registration ID).
Certificate No: (The unique approval ID for the device).
QR Code (Scannable link to the approval on TRA website).
Placement: On the product box/packaging and the device (if space permits). Electronic labeling (e-labeling) is permitted if physical labeling is difficult, but the package must still be marked.
